• Many databases available on the Linux platform both commercial and free

• None of the free databases provided the data integrity and transaction support required for an enterprise class application

• Okay, so we chose Oracle

  • Oracle is a recognised leader in the database arena for both reliability and scalability
  • Oracle itself has adopted Linux as its preferred platform
  • It may not be free but it runs on Linux

• Evidentally MySQL has transaction support now although it still does not support online backup
